What Is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)?
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a detergent, the same kind of surface-active agent (surfactant) manufacturers use in shampoo, body washes, and dish soap. It turns a pea-sized amount of toothpaste into a mouthful of bubbly foam that helps spread the flavor around your mouth.
SLS can irritate the soft tissue in your mouth, especially if you develop painful mouth ulcers, canker sores, or have sensitive gums. It can also cause skin peeling inside the cheeks and dry mouth.
SLS strips away the protective coating of protein and mucus (the mucin layer) that lines the inside of your mouth. When this happens, the delicate tissue underneath becomes exposed and vulnerable, which can cause a new canker sore to form due to minor everyday friction (like accidentally biting your inner cheek).
SLS also temporarily changes your taste buds and breaks down the compounds that block bitter flavors, which is why orange juice tastes terrible right after brushing your teeth.
Our Gentle Cleansing Formula
Dr. Jen Naturals uses sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, a surfactant made from coconut fatty acids. It lifts buildup from the teeth and spreads the paste around your mouth, with less foam and a milder effect on soft tissue.
We use sodium methyl cocoyl taurate in some of our fluoride-free toothpaste and across our Super Paste line.
Our products also contain premium nano hydroxyapatite at 10% to help remineralize the enamel surface and settle into the exposed dentin tubules (small, hollow microscopic channels in the dentin) that cause everyday sensitivity. Our nano hydroxyapatite toothpaste also helps pull bacteria from the teeth.
SLS Free Toothpaste: Smaller Bubbles, Bigger Benefits
Fewer Mouth Ulcers and Canker Sores
Research on SLS and recurrent aphthous ulcers showed that ten people prone to the common canker sore averaged 14.3 ulcers over three months of brushing with an SLS paste. The same ten averaged 5.1 over three months with an SLS free option. Our toothpaste may offer relief to people who get canker sores and mouth ulcers.
More Love for Sensitive Gums
Dental hygiene shouldn't come at the expense of your comfort. Our sodium lauryl sulfate toothpaste helps you care for your teeth without affecting sensitive gums. It may be a gentler approach for people with gingivitis, periodontitis, or sensitive, bleeding gums.
Keep the Moisture Your Mouth Needs
SLS can contribute to dry mouth by dehydrating the delicate mucosal lining. Our SLS free toothpastes clean your teeth without relying on this detergent, making it a potentially good option for people susceptible to dry mouth.
Preserves Good Bacteria
Your mouth has beneficial bacteria that help with oral health. Our SLS free formulas feature premium nano hydroxyapatite, an ingredient that helps replenish minerals in the tooth surface and protect the unique biology of every smile.
Zero Harsh Detergents in Every Tube
Enjoy SLS free formulas across all our products, including:
- Fluoride Free Toothpastes: We offer fluoride free toothpastes in flavors such as cool mint, strawberry, and watermelon for our 10% Premium Nano Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste. The Eggshell nHAp has nano hydroxyapatite derived from eggshells, and we have a KeraHAp option with biomimetic peptides.
- Fluoride Formulas: Our fluoride toothpastes pair 0.22% sodium fluoride with 10% premium nano hydroxyapatite to help prevent cavities and strengthen enamel. Our testing shows it's six times more effective than a 5,000 ppm prescription-strength fluoride paste in dry mouth conditions.

A Mother’s Love, Turned into a Mission
Dr. Jen’s daughter was months away from following in her mother’s footsteps into dental school when she suffered severe complications from a fractured tooth infection. When she finally returned home to heal, healthcare practitioners gave Dr. Jen one important instruction: check every product in their home, even the toothpaste.
Driven by love for her daughter and guided by a background as an engineer and practicing dentist, Dr. Jen improved the standard of dental care. She developed products that helped her daughter recover, which later evolved into the premium brand many dentists and customers trust today.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SLS Bad for Your Teeth?
SLS doesn’t damage or erode tooth enamel, but some people may experience irritation of the soft tissue in their cheeks and gums. SLS often causes irritation in people prone to mouth ulcers, canker sores, and dry mouth. An SLS-free toothpaste from Dr Jen Natural may be a more gentle option.
Can Toothpaste Without SLS Still Clean Your Teeth?
Yes. Toothbrush bristles and mild abrasives in the paste clean your teeth. Our SLS free toothpastes won’t produce as much foam, but they clean your teeth and help protect them from dental issues such as cavities, tooth decay, bad breath, and gingivitis.
Does SLS Free Toothpaste Whiten Teeth?
SLS free formulas can whiten teeth if they have the right active ingredient. Our toothpastes contain nHAp, which may whiten your teeth by lifting away plaque and surface food stains. Shop our whitening toothpaste options for a brighter smile.
Is Sulfate Free the Same as SLS Free?
SLS free means the toothpaste only excludes sodium lauryl sulfate, while sulfate free products exclude all sulfate-based detergents. Every sulfate-free paste is automatically SLS free, but an SLS free product isn’t 100% sulfate-free unless it says so on the package.
Do I Need to Avoid SLS Even if I Don't Experience Any Issues?
Plenty of people brush with an SLS toothpaste without any trouble. However, our SLS free products offer gentle cleansing and are suitable for anyone. They may be a soothing option for people with sensitive mouth tissues and gums, or those prone to canker sores and mouth ulcers.
