Is Eggshell Nano-Hydroxyapatite Made From Real Eggshells?
Short answer: Eggshell nHAp is nano-hydroxyapatite made from real chicken eggshells rather than built from scratch in a lab. The shells are cleaned, heated, and reacted with a phosphate source until their calcium becomes hydroxyapatite — the same mineral your tooth enamel is made of.

Nature already did most of the work
A chicken eggshell is 94–97% calcium carbonate, plus small amounts of magnesium carbonate, calcium phosphate and protein. It is, in effect, a ready-made block of biological calcium — grown by a living animal, in a matter of hours, at body temperature.
Synthetic hydroxyapatite starts from industrial calcium salts. Eggshell nHAp starts from a mineral that was already part of a living structure. That difference shows up in what ends up in the final crystal.
From shell to toothpaste
The process is less exotic than it sounds. Shells are cleaned and heated until the calcium carbonate breaks down. That calcium is then reacted with a phosphate source under controlled temperature and pH, and hydroxyapatite crystals form at nano scale — small enough to settle into the microscopic gaps in enamel and into the open tubules of exposed dentin, the channels behind that sharp zing from a cold drink.
There is a second upside. Eggshells are food waste. Turning them into a dental mineral is one of the rare cases where the cleaner input is also the better one.
The trace minerals a lab leaves out
Pure synthetic hydroxyapatite is exactly that: pure. But the apatite in your own teeth and bones is not pure. It carries small amounts of magnesium, zinc, strontium and carbonate — elements that shape how the crystal sits and behaves.

Has it actually been studied?
Yes. A 2025 scoping review in Evidence-Based Dentistry mapped 17 studies on eggshell-derived hydroxyapatite in dentistry — four on remineralization of early enamel lesions, four on sealing dentinal tubules, and the rest on bone grafting, periodontal regeneration and pulp capping. The reviewers concluded it is a promising biomaterial in dentistry.
