10% Nano-Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste: Does the Percentage Matter?

10% Nano-Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste: Does the Percentage Matter?

Table of Contents

You are holding two tubes. Both say 10% nano-hydroxyapatite. Are they the same?

Most likely not. A percentage tells you how much of an ingredient is present. It says nothing about the quality of that ingredient, the shape and purity of the crystals, or the formula built around them.

What Does "10% Nano-Hydroxyapatite" Actually Mean?

It describes concentration: how much of the formula is nano-hydroxyapatite.

That is genuinely useful, and 10% is the level most often used in research, including the 18-month randomised trial in adults and the studies gathered in a 2024 systematic review. But think about two foods that both contain 10% of an ingredient. You would still want to know more about the ingredient, what quality it is, and what else is in the packet. Toothpaste is no different.

    Is More Nano-Hydroxyapatite Automatically Better?

Not necessarily. Alongside concentration, the things worth weighing are:

    • Particle size
    • Particle shape
    • Purity
    • Crystal structure
    • The rest of the formulation
    • The evidence behind the intended use

The European Commission's SCCS opinion on nano-hydroxyapatite makes this point clearly. Its conclusions apply to a defined material with specified particle characteristics, not to anything that happens to share the name.

    Why Do Particle Characteristics Matter?

Nano-hydroxyapatite is defined by its scale, but two materials at the same scale can still be very different. Characterisation studies show meaningful variation in shape, purity and consistency between commercially available materials.

Dr. Jen's premium-grade nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) is made with uniform rod-shaped crystals, nano-sized particles and high purity. So the question we start with is not:

"How much nHAp can we get into the tube?"

    It is:

"What kind of nHAp are we putting in the tube?"

What About Dr. Jen's 10% Formula?

Dr. Jen's offers a true 10% premium nano-hydroxyapatite, with no fillers added to pad the percentage, in both a fluoride and a fluoride-free version. Which one suits you depends on whether you want fluoride alongside premium nHAp or prefer to go without.

    The Bottom Line

If you are comparing two 10% toothpastes, do not stop at "10%". Do your research on what the 10% is made of, what shape the crystals are, how pure they are, what else is in the formula and what evidence supports it. The number matters. It is just not the whole story.
